In my Integrating Technology into the Classroom course, the major assignment was to create a unit plan this semester. When I first heard this in the beginning weeks of school, I was nervous. Why? Well, it would be my first attempt at creating any type of academic plan for students to follow for the scholastic year. I had no clue where to start or what topic to choose. On top of that, I had to do a module that required four lesson plans, a multimodal tutorial, and create a website (this one). To top it all off, the class was only once a week for two hours and forty-five minutes. I felt like I had been hit by a bus and I was not even trying to cross the street.
I had no choice but to get it together, come into the class with a clear/focused mind, and try my best. After some thought about the assignment, it made sense to me that I do a unit on the alphabet. I am an early child education major with plans to become a kindergarten teacher. What makes more sense than the alphabet and kindergarten? They go together like salt and pepper or peanut butter and jelly. The alphabet is also the foundation for language and literacy skills. Without mastery of the two, it newly impossible to become proficient in either subject or in communication using Standard American English. I thought this would be a great start to ensure that students are proficient in Language and Literacy.
Once given a template for a unit plan I was able to get my thoughts out clearly and organize just what I wanted to do for the assignment. It did not take long before I began to do the unthinkable and write lesson plans. Like I said before, I had no experience writing anything for a classroom for I began to amaze myself. I was very critical of my work because I was not sure what I should and should not include. I also did not know if what I wanted to incorporate was age appropropriate. So the process of creating lessons plans and my final unit plan was a lot of trial and error.
As the semester went on and I was assigned each part of the module, I started to learn how to incorporate different types of learning, teaching mediums, and comply with the state standards. Though some parts of the assigment were challenging, I was successful in creating my own unit plan by the end of the semester. I created lesson plans that dealt with online collaborative learning/ inquiry, language skills, and public speaking. I went as far as to design a research project for kindergarten students that encouraged them to work collaboratively using problem sovling skills.
Now that the semester is over, I am thankful for everything this course has taught me. I know of new ways to incorporate technology into the classroom that i never knew or thought of before ever in my life. I have grown not only as a student but also as a future educator. I went from being lost because everything was so new to me to now being able to write lesson and unit plans for my classroom. I really enjoyed this semester and hopefully will be able to one day use the unit plan i made this semester in my classroom!
